Polio vaccines are causing paralysis and death in India and the local press is reporting it (not the US press, of course). This article is from the largest circulation English language paper in South India.  Read more…

  • April 14, 2012 Cases of non-polio acute flaccid paralysis, better known as AFP, has sharply increased with the increase in the administration of oral polio vaccination (OPV) in the country under the much-acclaimed polio eradication programme.

If they have to use any polio vaccine at all, why is it not of the inactivated sort, i.e., IPV, the stuff that’s used in the “developed” world? IPV may be a tad more expensive in the short term, but it would likely be more cost effective in the long term, especially if it is a bit more gentle on the vacinees. Another question that would need answers when looking at paralysis cases from polio and/or polio vaccines, is the question of whether DDT or DDT-like pesticides are being used in India. If these sorts of pesticides are still being used, polio and/or polio-like symptoms/signs will continue to be seen, as some of these may be caused by exposure to these types of pesticides.
